Three Episodes for Bassoon Quartet Brent Heisinger
Three Episodes for Bassoon Quartet was composed
in the 60s when the San José University of Music had excellent bassoon
students. My next-door office was
inundated throughout the day with the wonderful qualities of the bassoon, which
prompted me to conceive this work. In
three movements-Allegro con spirito, Cantando, Presto/Adagio Expressivo/Tempo
Primo-the work juxtaposes lyricism with energetic rhythmic gestures and
explores the richness and expressive qualities of the instrument. Included on my EKTA CD, the outstanding
bassoonists are Rufus Olivier (1st), Jerry Dagg (2nd),
Robin Elliot (3rd), and Deborah Kramer (4th), all active
performers in San Francisco Bay Area performing ensembles. Brent Heisinger
