Known
as the "Paganini of the double bass", composer, conductor, and double bass
virtuoso, Giovanni Bottesini, toured the world with his bass before there were
any cars or airplanes. His contributions to the double bass repertoire are
fundamental, composing a number of short pieces as well as two concerti. He was
a busy conductor, even premiering the performance of Verdi's "Aida",
and legend has it that in between acts during his opera performances, he would
play some of his short pieces for double bass such as this one. Nicholas Santangelo Schwartz
