Manuel Castillo (b. 1930) is a Seville native
whose compositional style is more in the Franco-Russian
school, particularly in his more ambitious works where he seems a Hispanic successor
to Prokofiev. Castillo's music seldom refers overtly to Spanish popular melodies
and styles, but occasionally something peeks through, most often in a dance
rhythm. Perpetuum (1992) was
designed as a contest piece. It briefly recalls Prokofiev, but makes its own
