The
piece sharply contrasts rock rhythm and harmony with atonal sections marked "halting, unsettled." Differences in dynamic and timbre
heighten the contrast. After two
alternating statements in E major, the piano then quietly develops the rhythm
and harmony of the rock material underneath fragmentary material played by the
vibraphone. The piano reaches a point of
total stasis, then
crescendoes into a jubilant restatement of the opening material. The piece ends tragically, though, with a
crashing final interruption.
