Biography

Pianist Alexandras Kapelis has appeared in recital and as soloist in England, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Malta, Cyprus and the Middle East, as well as the United States, Mexico, and South America, and has performed in venues as New York's Lincoln Centerand Steinway Hall, the United Nations; London's Cadogan Hall; the Salle Cortot in Paris; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Athens Megaron.

As soloist, Mr. Kapelis has appeared with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the Monterrey Symphony of Mexico, the Camerata Italica of Rome, and with musicians of the New York Philharmonic at Alice Tully Hall, where in one concert he performed a pianist's tour-de-force program consisting of two concertos, chamber music and solo piano works. An appreciated chamber music partner, he has participated in several international music festivals and has collaborated with principal musicians of the Philharmonia Orchestra, of the Berlin Philharmonic and of the New York Philharmonic, as well as with the Avalon Quartet.

Born of a Greek father and Peruvian mother, Mr. Kapelis grew up with the advantages of a dual heritage and spent time in both countries during his formative years. He began playing the piano at the age of five and has studied with prominent musicians, including Dimitri Toufexis at the American College of Greece, Diane Walsh and Julius Levine at the Mannes College of Music in New York, and Noretta Conci in London. Mr. Kapelis also studied orchestral conducting in Rome. He conducted Handel's opera Giulio Cesare at the Ernen Musikdorf Festival in Switzerland and has gone on to conduct Bach and Mozart piano concertos from the keyboard.

Alexandras Kapelis' most recent engagements include his debut with the Royal Philharmonic in London last October, as well as a special New York appearance at the Dahesh Museum, in conjunction with the museum's exhibit on the legacy of Homer. On this occasion, Mr. Kapelis premiered an unprecedented recital program surveying Greek history and mythology as a source of inspiration in the solo piano repertoire. Upcoming highlights this season include a tour of Europe in May with the acclaimed chamber ensemble of musicians of the New York Philharmonic, the Philharmonic Chamber Soloists, as well as his debuts at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco and at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater next March.

Alexandras Kapelis resides in New York City and Paris. He is a Steinway Artist.
