Biography

ANA's website: http://www.anamilo.com

Acclaimed as “an imaginative artist willing to think big” (The Strad), ANA Milosavljevic is a Serbian native and New York City-based composer, violinist, and Viper electric violinist of eclectic, cutting-edge contemporary music influenced by disparate genres including traditional Balkan music, electronica, rock, jazz, classical, pop, hip-hop, and improvisation.

Her “inventive,” “graceful,” ”showpiece” works (New York Times) have been premiered at Carnegie Hall, Off-Broadway, Le Poisson Rouge and the Tribeca New Music Festival; performed by Grammy Award-winning Native American flutist Robert Mirabal, string quartet ETHEL (with whom she’s also appeared as a guest violinist in concerts nationally and internationally), Ensemble Metamorphosis, pianists Kathleen Supove, Jed Distler, Vicky Chow, Marvin Rosen, Terezija Cukrov, Marco Dalpane, Jasna Popovic, Lenka Petrovic, and Marija Ilic, and featured in choreography by Takehiro Ueyama (TAKE Dance). Ana received a commission from visual artist Vittoria Chierici to compose a film score Luci in the Sky, and a commission from artist, architect and writer Corrado Levi to compose a work for cello. ANA composes music for film, dance, theater, and instrumental concert music, and fosters numerous multimedia collaborations. Most recently, she has been awarded the prestigious MacDowell Colony Fellowship.

ANA has performed solo recitals at such renown concert halls as Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center’s Rose Studio, Belgrade Philharmonic Hall, Kolarac Concert Hall, The TimesCenter, as well as hip “downtown” NYC clubs including Le Poisson Rouge, Cornelia Street Café, and The Stone, and has also appeared at major festivals including the Tribeca New Music Festival Spoleto in Italy, Aspen, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, 2008 Beijing International Congress on Women in Music in China, the American Festival of Microtonal Music, Music With a View @ The Flea, ASCAP’s Thru the Walls showcase series, and Composers Collaborative’s Serial Underground. One of New York’s most in-demand violinists, ANA has also premiered and recorded works — some written especially for her — by world-renowned composers. She has also performed with Thomas Dolby, Antony and the Johnsons, and collaborated with singer/songwriter Joy Askew, with whom she appeared in the Art for Animals concert at Club Helsinki Hudson featuring headliner Laurie Anderson.

ANA has received awards from Artists International Presentations, Inc., New York Women Composers, Inc., ASCAPLUS Award, the Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University, Soros Fund, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. ANA attended the School for Musically Gifted Children, and completed her bachelor's degree at Novi Sad University’s Academy of Arts in Serbia. She received her master's degree and professional studies diploma at Mannes College The New School for Music in New York. ANA currently serves on the faculty of Mannes College The New School for Music and the Brearley School in New York City.

ANA has been featured on WNYC, WPRB and WQXR / Q2 radio stations, the Voice of America international telecasts, New York’s MNN Public TV broadcasts, and Serbian radio and television. She can be heard on the Innova, Albany, Chandos, Pitch, and Neos Classics labels. ANA's album Reflections was released on Innova Recordings in October 2010.
