Biography

Ben Cappsenjoys a versatile performing career as a soloist and chamber musician.  A native of NYC, he began playing the cello at age four. At ten he was admitted to The Juilliard School Pre-College, and now holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory and Juilliard.  His principal teacher was David Soyer, as well as Fred Sherry and Laurence Lesser.

Recent performance highlights include an unaccompanied recital tour in the Midwest & throughout Vermont, a recital tour of China, New York City, Greece, Spain and South Africa. He recently performed on WFMT’s Impromptu with Vassily Primakov, and he was featured on Vermont Public Radio playing the complete cello sonatas of Beethoven, Mendelssohn & Brahms, later performing all of them in four concerts.

His artistry has been praised as “most appealing” by the New York Times, “virtuosic and impassioned” by the Barre Montpelier Times, and the Holland Times hailed Mr. Capps as a “young cello phenomenon”.

He can be heard on Innova Records with two albums premiering works for solo cello, and he recently released two wide-ranging albums with LP Classics.  He plays a William Forester cello built in 1782, in England.
