Brian L. Diehl, Trombone

Biography

After graduating from the
Interlochen Arts Academy (where he received the Fine Arts Award for Brass)
trombonist Brian L.Diehl received a
B.M. from Northwestern University and an M.M. from the New England Conservatory
of Music (becoming the first brass player at NEC to receive the Rabb
Presidential Scholarship). Mr. Diehl was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music
Center for two seasons and worked under Seiji Ozawa, Simon Rattle, Jeffrey
Tate, and Marek Janowski. He also completed a three-year fellowship with the New
World Symphony, under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.

 

Mr. Diehl is currently Principal
Trombonist with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, under Kevin Rhodes
Direction, and performs with many regional orchestras and ensembles throughout
New England, including: Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic,
Boston Modern Orchestral Project, to name a few. Former Principal trombone of
the Florida West Coast Symphony (Sarasota, FL), Mr. Diehl has performed with
the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, 
and Boston Pops Esplanade, as well as performances with The Florida
Orchestra (Tampa), and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he made a
recording in 1989 of the music of Verdi with Sir Georg Solti. He has also
performed under such notable conductors as Luciano Berio, Leonard Bernstein,
Eduarto Mata, Gunther Schuller, Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Stephan Sanderling,
Bernard Haitink, Jahja Ling, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Leonard Slatkin.

 

Mr. Diehl is an avid soloist and
proponent of the trombone. He has commissioned and arranged several works for
the trombone, two of which (Anthony DiLorenzo’s concerto Little Buckaroo and Lauren Bernofsky’s solo Devil’s Dermish), have received rave reviews throughout the world.  His book “Low Brass Essentials” has been
a text for numerous brass students, and has been used by students at
Northwestern University.  He has
performed as a Solo Guest Artist with the National Repertory Orchestra in
Colorado, soloist with New World Symphony, Florida West Coast Symphony, and as
a concerto competition winner with the New England Conservatory Orchestra. Mr.
Diehl was chosen as Finalist in the Houston Symphony’s “Ima Hogg” Concerto
Competition 1994, and has done solo work with Christian Lindberg and Joseph
Alessi.

 

Mr. Diehl performs solo recitals
and master classes throughout the US, and recently appeared as a performing
artist at the International Trumpet Guild in Pennsylvania, promoting a new work
for Brass Trio by Lauren Bernofsky.  
An Avid chamber musician, Mr. Diehl has been a member of the New World
Brass Quintet, Epic Brass, Innovata Brass, as well as with the Millar Brass
Ensemble of Chicago. 

 

Mr. Diehl has given masterclasses
at Eastman School of Music and at Tanglewood, where as a member of the New
World Brass, he was in the Faculty Quintet in Residence at the Empire Brass
Seminar. 

 

Mr. Diehl is currently teaching as
Artist Faculty at University of Southern Maine in Gorham, ME.  He has formerly taught at Florida
International University (Miami), and University of South Florida (Tampa).  He maintains a teaching and recording
studio in his Andover, MA home, which he shares with his wife, son, and two
cats.
