Daniel M. Stevens, Flute

Biography

b. 1942, northern Ohio. Trombonist in HS band. First year of college at Wilmington College, southern Ohio. In San Francisco, 1968-74, studied flute with John Geanacos, a retired flutist who had once played under Pierre Monteux in the Detroit Symphony. In 1980-84 attended Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, WV, taking a music minor in composition.

In 1983 I wrote a digital synthesizer program for the Radio Shack Color Computer called the Synther7. This emulated a synthesizer chip and turned the computer keyboard into a musical keyboard with 50 voices. Licensed it and sold it in the US and Britain.

Developed an electronic circuit that could measure pitch and wrote a pitch-training program for an Apple IIe to satisfy my music department work-study obligations.

Used a Forth language interpreter on my Color Computer to auto-compose 4-voice microtonal music, which brought 2 semesters of A's in music composition. "19 tones" tuned my little synth to a 19 tone scale. The command "14 events" would create a string of random 4-note chords. "Cadence" placed a major chord at the end. "Interpolate" would create intermediate chords where each voice was pitched half-way between the last pitch and the next pitch. When used several times, it produced scalar runs. As the music approached the final chord, it would sort of edge itself into consonance. I hope to get some old tape of this up online soon.

After retiring from a brief career as a computer programmer, I put some "play-along" flute duets up on YouTube under the moniker "fluteler". These allow a visitor to play a duet with me as the music scrolls across the screen.

As "Techmark Arts" I have published seven CDs of my friend, New England Composer Peter Sky's, keyboard improvisations. Peter has been developing his skills for 30 years, and has had programs on two different public radio stations. His music speaks to the heart. It is pure and true. (He's not to be confused with the British heavy metal guitarist of the same name. He had the name first.)

Lately, I've been making "stretch music" out of some of Peter's shorter works, using the PaulStretch tool to start a song 50 times slower than recorded and invisibly bring it up to tempo over many minutes. Our series is going to be called "From Space to Place", and the music will be available for free download on my website, www.techmarkarts.com.

Under the YouTube name "Beedehat" I also have recently made 3d video slideshows out of old stereoscope cards. These zoom in on ancient landscapes, pan to the sky and fade to the next.

I lost my tootling partner seven years ago this October. Someday I hope to find another flute duettist - need not be professional! - to play with. I have ALL the Telemann flute sonatas, including some discovered only a few years ago. Can travel in Chicago. email: vivanaut@mindspring.com, site: www.techmarkarts.com.
