Biography

Ethella Chupryk

Born in 1964, in the small city of Vynohradovo in the Zakarpattia region of Ukraine, Ethella started learning to play piano at the age of three, and at the age of five she performed her first concert with compositions by Schubert, Motzart and Chopin. After completing Musical College in Uzhhorod in 1986 Ethella entered the Mykola Lysenko Conservatory in Lviv. While still completing her studies, Ethella became laureate at several prestigious international competitions: 1988 - Lysenko Competition in Kyiv (First Prize) 1990 - Rakhmaninov Competition in Moscow (Third Prize) 1991 - Liszt Competition in Budapest (Third Prize) Also, in 1994 Ethella received Gold Medal and special honor at the Horowitz Competition in Kyiv and a honorary bursary from the Richard Wagner Association in Bayreuth in 1998. Ethella is also a member of the jury for the Mykola Lysenko Competition, and since 1996 she has been Vice-President of the Association of Ukrainian Pianists. Ethella has toured with symphony orchestras in Europe and played with conductors such as Djansug Kakhidze, Fedir Hluschenko, Volodymyr Sirenko, Andrash Lizeti, Jerzy Salwatorski, Tadeusz Madej, Vladimir Ponkin, Robert Koenig and others. A significant occasion has been Ethella's performance at the Concert in Honour of the Inauguration of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, which took place in the Palace of Ukraine in Kyiv on January 23, 2005 following the Orange Revolution. Early in 2008 Ethella was in Vancouver Canada to record a double CD set of Ukrainian classical composers along with her own transcriptions of well known works primarily written for orchestras. Besides pedagogical work, Ethella is constantly touring the country and performing either solo or together with leading Ukrainian orchestras.
