Biography

American baritone Eugene Chan is quickly becoming one of the leading artists of his generation.  He garnered critical acclaim when he stepped in with less than 24 hours notice to sing Orff’s Carmina Burana at the world-renowned Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Bramwell Tovey, in July 2008.

Recent highlights include his role debut as Dandini in Daniele Abbado’s production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola with the prestigious Teatro Comunale di Bologna in Italy. He returned to Theater Basel in Switzerland both as Il Conte Almaviva in the revival series of Le nozze di Figaro and for a role debut as Prince Yeletsky in a new production of Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame, winner of the prestigious Sullivan Foundation and recital appearance’s for San Francisco Opera’s prestigious “Schwabacher Debut Recital Series” and Marilyn Horne Foundation’s Annual Series “The Song Continues”at Carnegie Hall.

Mr. Chan has performed throughout the world with companies such as the San Francisco Opera, Opera Theater of St. Louis, Theater Basel, Shanghai National Grand Theater, Sacramento Opera and Opera Santa Barbara in repertoire that include’s the title role’s of Don Giovanni and Eugene Onegin, Ottone (L’incoronazione di Poppea), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Danilo (The Merry Widow), Schaunard (La bohème), Albert (Werther), Gasparo (Rita), Abbate Cospicuo (Arlecchino), L’Horloge Comtoise/Le Chat (L’enfant et les sortilèges), and Dancaire/Morales (Carmen).

An avid recitalist, Mr. Chan made his Carnegie Hall debut under the auspices of the Marilyn Horne Foundation in January 2008. He has been featured as soloist with orchestra’s such as the San Francisco Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Toscanini Orchestra of Parma in repertoire that includes Orff’s Carmina Burana, the Fauré Requiem, Copland’s Old American Songs, the Brahms Requiem, Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel, the Charpentier Te Deum, the Dvořák Te Deum, and Ligeti’s Aventures & Nouvelle Aventures.

Mr. Chan holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Sacramento State University and is a graduate of the Theater Basel OperAvenir, Seattle Opera Young Artists Program, Music Academy of the West, the Steans Institute at the Ravinia Festival, OperaWorks!, and San Francisco Opera’s Merola training programs. He has received awards from the Premio Spiros Argiris International Competition, the Umberto Giordano International Competition, the Washington International Competition, the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Liederkranz Foundation, Houston Opera’s Eleanor McCollum Competition, the Marilyn Horne Foundation and the William Matheus Sullivan Foundation.
