Biography

Originally from Dublin and currently based in New York City, Isabelle O'Connell is one of Ireland's most exciting and successful pianists. Her performances have taken her around the United States, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, Italy and Ireland. She made her New York Debut recital at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall in January 2002 -only the second Irish pianist ever to perform there. She has since performed in New York at Carnegie's Zankel Hall, Merkin Hall, Steinway Hall, the 'Noonday Concert Series' at Trinity Church on Wall St., and the Goethe Institut and in Chicago at the PianoForte series in the Fine Arts Building.

Ms. O'Connell is a committed advocate of music by 20th and 21st century composers. Both her recital debuts in New York and Dublin featured premieres by Irish composer Philip Martin. In 2005 she participated in a Carnegie Hall workshop and performance featuring the music of John Adams, conducted by the composer. In 2006 she performed with composer/singer Meredith Monk at the Bang on a Can Summer Festival. She has also recorded works by Irish composers Ian Wilson and Frank Corcoran for Lyric FM.

She made her debut as concerto soloist in 1999 at the National Concert Hall, Dublin. In 2004 she debuted with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland under conductor William Eddins. Her festival appearances include the Pablo Casals Festival (France), Bowdoin Chamber Music Festival (USA), Mannes Contemporary Music Festival (USA), Sligo New Music Festival (Ireland), Waterford New Music Week (Ireland) and the West Cork Chamber Music Festival (Ireland). In 2003, she was in residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts where she collaborated with the New Zealand String Quartet. She returned in January 2004 as senior artist in residence and collaborative pianist.

In addition to winning an award from Artists International in 2001, Ms. O'Connell was awarded the Tibor Paul Medal while at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. In 1998, she was the first recipient of the Mabel Swainson Pianoforte Award at the Siemens Feis Ceoil, which led to her debut recital at the John Field Room in Dublin. She has also earned the Ulster Bank Music Foundation Piano Award, a Fulbright scholarship, a Bank of Ireland Millenium Scholarship, and a John F. Kennedy scholarship.

Ms. O'Connell has appeared on television and radio for Radio Telefis Eireann — Ireland's National Television and Radio Broadcaster—and for BBCTV3. Her concerto and recital performances have also been broadcast on RTE Lyric FM radio and in March 2004 she recorded a recital for BBC3 radio at the Sligo New Music Festival. She holds a Masters degree from the Manhattan School of Music and a B.A. in Music Performance from the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin.
