Jennifer Jiaxin Liu, Piano

Biography

Jennifer is a Piano Performance major at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, where she has just completed her 2nd year of studies in April with Jamie Parker. She has been awarded the Alice and Armen Matheson full-tuition scholarship for the duration of her studies in the program, was a U of T scholar upon entrance into the University, and was very recently honoured as a recipient of the 2012 David and Martha Beach Summer Study Award for her studies at the Orford Music Academy.

A native of Toronto, Jennifer is a graduate of the Claude Watson Arts Program at Earl Haig Secondary School. Her piano performance credits include appearances at Massey Hall, Toronto Centre for the Arts, Glenn Gould Studio, Scarborough Civic Centre, as well as in Quebec (Sherbrooke, Quebec City, Chicoutimi, Orford). Jennifer is a two-time national award winner and multi-scholarship recipient at the Canadian Music Competition, as well as at various competitions in Ontario. Notable musical achievements include national prizes at ACNMP Contemporary Showcase Festival and Kiwanis Music Festival of Greater Toronto, a full-tuition award for studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music, prizewinner at Toronto’s Ukrainian Music Festival, solo piano appearances with the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra and the YAPA Academy Symphony Orchestra, as well as the performance and recording of original compositions by the Gryphon Trio and the Amici Ensemble.
As a music theory student of composer Larysa Kuzmenko, Jennifer was offered the chance to perform her composition In Memoriam to the Victims of Chornobyl at a national competition as well as have her performance of the piece uploaded onto Ms. Kuzmenko’s website. Outside of her solo work, Jennifer is active as collaborative pianist. She also is involved in musical activities which give back to the community – including a benefit recital performance for the Canadian Cancer Society, work as a music theory tutor while attending high school, a continuing partnership with Toronto General Hospital to perform in their Music for the Heart and Soul concert series, and ongoing volunteer work with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (tSoundcheck). Previous piano studies were undertaken with Xianjie (Jay) Zhu, Meizhi Bi, Tanya Tkachenko, and Derek Bampton. Other aspects of her musical background include years of study and participation in clarinet, voice, conducting, and percussion playing opportunities. Jennifer also performs with and for other musicians on a regular basis, as well as lends her piano-playing services for special events.

Jennifer hopes to pursue collaborative performance as both a career and during her continued music studies. Later this summer, she will be participating in her first music-intensive session at the Orford Academy. Most recently, in June 2012, Jennifer and her violin duo partner were selected to perform at a concert organized by Universal Music Group and Decca Classics in Toronto’s Heliconian Hall.
