Biography

Canadian-American lyric tenor John Jay Hébert has sung throughout North America as well as Europe and Asia. He received critical acclaim for his portrayals of Gerald in Lakmé at Toronto Opera and the role of Ubaldo Piangi in The Phantom of the Opera in Toronto and Asia.
Most recently he performed in, directed and produced Union City Opera’s 2012 Gala concert. Linda Phillips of the Greenwich Citizen Review wrote “Tenor John Jay Hebert’s voice soared, performing with notable musicality and magnificence.” Fernando Campo of El Especial wrote “A resounding bravo to tenor John Jay Hebert who sang with elegance and beauty.” This year John Jay was also awarded the Mayor’s Award for outstanding artistic achievement from Union City Mayor Brian Stack.
This past season John Jay created the role of Ragnar in The Scaffolding by American composer Martin Halpern. This marks the fourth appearance by Mr. Hebert in Halpern’s Operas. Others include The Death of Peer Gynt, The Lock of Hair and The Dwarf Trees.
Upcoming engagements include The Messiah and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with Baltimore Chorale, and Cosi fan Tutte and La Boheme with Union City Opera.
John Jay recently performed Remendado in Carmen in his debut with the Connecticut Grand Opera. He has sung with opera companies across Canada in such roles as Hoffmann in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Tonio in La Fille de Regiment, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Nadir in Les Pecheurs De Perles, Romeo in Romeo et Juliet, Tebaldo in I Capuletti Ed I Montecchi, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, the title role in Prometheus, Alfredo in La Traviata, Ferrando in Cosi Fan Tutte, Tamino in The Magic Flute. and the title role in Werther.
As a prolific concert artist, Mr. Hébert's credits include Handel's Messiah, Orff's Carmina Burana, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and a Radio Canada live broadcast of Rachmaninoff’s Vespers with Choeur Chanson de Montreal. He performed frequently with the Vancouver Opera, the Vancouver Symphony, the Toronto Opera and the Toronto Operetta Theater.
On film he has appeared as Officer Down in the mini-series Robocop: Prime Directives for Fireworks Entertainment and as The Pilot in the feature film Airborne for Alliance Atlantis. He is also an accredited documentary filmmaker and director, and has produced films for many well known artists including The Rolling Stones, The Who, Genesis, The Police, Sting, Mariah Carey, INXS and The Jonas Brothers to name a few.
