Biography

Kathryn Christian Stevens

Piano

Kathryn Christian Stevens began private piano study at the age of 11, and discovered her passion and gift for music. She excelled quickly, and after a year of lessons transferred to Melanie Nelson Squires, BM NCTM. She received many honors and awards for the next seven years of study, including first place in the Future Music Teachers Competition, 3rd place Joy Robin Piano Competition, Honors Recital Participant of the Sandy Chapter UMTA Evaluations, and progressed to the State level of the Solo and Ensemble High School competition. As a high school Senior, Kathryn auditioned for the University's School of Music and was awarded the Tracy A piano scholarship for all four years of undergraduate study.  Under the direction of Professor Lenora Brown, Kathryn received praises as a performer for her musical sensitivity and powerful virtuosity. One such performance placed her as a top-5 winner of the SummerArts Concerto competition, and was awarded a solo performance with the SummerArts Professional Orchestra.

In 2004, after graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree, Kathryn was accepted into the Graduate program and, with high recommendation from the faculty, was offered a Teaching Assistant position. As a T.A., Kathryn instructed two sections of the Keyboard Skills Course for music majors, and went on to become a faculty member of the University of Utah School of Music's Preparatory Division. She taught private lessons, group musicianship classes, and created an original curriculum of theory, ear-training, and performance techniques for her classes.

In 2006, while in the Graduate program, Kathryn was awarded the MTNA Student Achievement Recognition or 'StAR' Award. The StAR Award is given to outstanding music students who intend to teach professionally. Faculty and administrators select one recipient based on excellence in academic achievement, successful teaching experience, and demonstrated leadership abilities. She graduated with a Master of Music degree in 2007.

Kathryn was a member of the Prep Division piano faculty from 2004-2008, and now runs a private piano studio in her home in West Jordan. Her students consistently receive high honors for their performances, including Superior ratings in the Federation of Music Club's Solo and Concerto festivals, and invitations to perform in the "Best of Festival' recital and Honors recital of the SummerArts Piano competition. She is a NFMC and UMTA member and on the committee for the Salt Lake Piano Competition.
