Biography

Mariam Vardzelashvili is a pianist born in Tbilisi, Georgia, a country known for its vibrant piano school and rich tradition of polyphonic folk music. Georgian piano school itself was heavily influenced by the Russian style of piano playing as well as the lyrical abilities of a human voice. Mariam absorbed Georgian musical mentality since the beginning of her studies at the age of 6, and later expanded her musical palette to include influences from France, Austria and the U.S.
Since her debut at age of 8 with the Georgian National TV and Radio Orchestra, Mariam has performed in France, Austria, Hungary, The Netherlands, Germany, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium, Serbia and the U.S.

Mariam’s musical education began in her hometown Tbilisi, where she studied at the Z. Paliashvili Music School for gifted Children as well as V. Sarajishvili Tbilisi State Conservatory, with noted teachers L. Piralishvili and N. Katamadze.
Her musical journey began at age 20 when she moved to the U.S. to continue her studies with Professors M. Mogilevsky and Dr. L. Melton. Upon completing her Master’s degree Mariam moved to Paris to concentrate on French repertoire and get exposed to the French School of piano playing under the guidance of E. Erlendsdottir. Mariam has been Vienna-based since 2011 where she concentrated on expanding her Chamber repertoire and had an opportunity to work with renown Masters of the Piano Chamber repertoire- C. Schuster and L. Monti.Her competition success both as a soloist and a chamber musician includes prizes at competitions like ‘F. Chopin Young Musicians’ Competition’ in Novi Sad, Serbia, ”Gaudeamus Interpretors Competition”’in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and ”Dr. Marjoree Petee Art Song Competition” in Bowling Green, United States. A devoted soloist, Mariam is an advocate of new music and an experienced chamber musician, as well as a vocal coach. Her interest in New Music resulted in many world, European and North American premieres, including pieces written for and premiered by the saxophone/piano ‘Solaris Duo’.

Mariam has been featured on Georgian, Serbian, Dutch and Austrian radios as well as Georgian and U.S. TV channels.

Mariam’s 4 years of private vocal lessons with the legendary Georgian soprano Medea Amiranashvili have given her a special understanding and insight into the vocal repertoire. She is fluent in five languages and a connoisseur of the Visual Arts and European literature, which help her in understanding and absorbing new cultures.
