Philip Zuckerman, Violin

Biography

Praised for his “enchanting tone” (Badische Zeitung), 21-year-old violinist Philip Zuckerman began his violin studies at an early age in his hometown of Örebro, Sweden. His debut performances took place shortly thereafter in fundraiser concerts for Swedish charity organization “Radio Help,” contributing to the efforts to help children in need across the world. Since then, Philip has maintained a vigorous performance schedule as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician.

In past seasons, Philip has performed in venues such as Lincoln Center's Peter Jay Sharp Theater, South Bank Centre in London, Philharmonic Hall Baden-Baden, Neue Galerie in New York, the City Hall of Stockholm with orchestras such as Camerata Nova, Baden-Baden Philharmonic, and Capella Sine Nomine, and has appeared at Usedom Music Festival, Aurora Music Festival, Casalmaggiore Music Festival, Kneisel Hall Music Festival, Perlman Music Program, and Gotland Chamber Music Festival, as well as Lincoln Center's Focus! Festival.

Chamber music holds a special and vital place in Philip's musical life, and he has appeared in concert with Joyce DiDonato, Duncan McTied, as well as members of the Cleveland, Cavani, Yggdrasil, and Vertavo quartets. Philip is committed to the performance of new music, regularly collaborating with the New Juilliard Ensemble; he holds among his cherished artistic memories the New York premiere of Harrison Birtwistle's Cantus Iambeus, and the Lincoln Center premiere of Gubaidulina's String Quartet no.4.

As an orchestral musician, Philip has played under the batons of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Alan Gilbert, Itzhak Perlman, Edward Gardner, Jeffrey Kahane, David Robertson, and Vladimir Jurowski, in Carnegie Hall's Isaac Stern Auditorium and Zankel Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and the Peter Jay Sharp Theater.

Beyond the concert stage Philip has been featured on MPBN'S Morning Classical Music with Suzanne Nanze as well as Swedish Public Radio. Philip is a recipient of grants from, among others, the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, the Swedish Order of Freemasons, and the American Scandinavian Society.

Philip continues his studies towards a bachelor's degree at The Juilliard School in New York City with Catherine Cho and Itzhak Perlman. Past teachers include Natasha Beshulya, Sylvia Rosenberg, and Ulf Wallin.

Philip plays a Jean Baptiste Vuillaume violin on generous loan from the private collection of Dr. Peter Hauber, Berlin.
