Biography

Winner of the "Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde Mosel-Eifel" Prize in Germany, pianist gulo Martínez-Antón has appeared in renowned venues throughout Europe and North and South America. A versatile and passionate performing artist, Mr. Martínez-Antón has proven himself to be one of the most intriguing Spanish pianists of his generation. He performs frequently as both a recitalist and concerto soloist. Recent highlights include a solo recital at the prestigious El Escorial Music Festival and a performance of Beethovens “Emperor” Concerto with Maestro Michael Francis and the Andres Segovia Chamber Orchestra in Spain. He received a special invitation from El Sistema and its founder Maestro José Abreu to perform a recital in Caracas, Venezuela, commemorating the life of pianist Alicia de Larrocha. Mr. Martínez-Antón also gave the Canadian premiere of the music drama Chopin and the Nightingale, performing the leading role of Chopin at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. 

An active chamber musician, he has collaborated with renowned musicians including Lynn Harrell, Paul Coletti, Ronald Leonard, Guillaume Sutre, and members of JONDE, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the LA Opera. Mr. Martinez-Anton recently performed a series of critically acclaimed concerts as a guest pianist with the Saguaro Piano Trio, including a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio with the American Contemporary Ballet. He has appeared as a guest artist with the Colburn Chamber Music Society and at the Montecito International Music Festival.

A strong advocate for contemporary Spanish music, Mr. Martínez-Antón has commissioned and premiered several solo and chamber works by composers including Juan Colomer and Oscar Navarro. As part of an ongoing collaboration with the Consulate General of Spain, he has given world premieres in venues throughout Los Angeles, including the University of Southern California and the Colburn School.   His summer festival appearances include both solo and chamber performances at the Sarasota Music Festival in Florida, the National Orchestra Institute in Washington D.C., the Banff Center in Canada, the Bad Bertrich Festival in Germany, and the Festival Internacional de Música de Lucena in Spain. He was also invited several summers to participate in the prestigious Lake Como International Piano Academy, where he worked with William Grant Nabore. Other master classes included artists such as Leon Fleisher, Yefim Bronfman and Pascal Roge.

Born in Madrid, Mr. Martínez-Antón studied at the University of Music in Graz, Austria where he earned a Magister Artium degree. He subsequently received an Artist Diploma Solo at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and a Professional Studies Certificate from the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles where he served during the 5 years following his graduation as John Perry’s teaching assistant. In 2006 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. Mr. Martínez-Antón is currently a full-time piano faculty member at the Colburn School of Performing Arts and the Montecito International Music Festival. He has made recordings for RNE and TVE (Spain), ORF (Austria), KUSC (USA), CTV, CBC (Canada) and RTV Slovenia.
