Biography

Nineteen-year-old violinist Shana Douglas is a fourth-year student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia
where she studies with Ida Kavafian and Arnold Steinhardt. She is a member of the first violin section of Curtis’ Symphony
Orchestra, which performs frequently under the batons of Otto-Werner Mueller, David Zinman, Christoph Eschenbach, and will perform at
Carnegie Hall this season. Before attending Curtis, Shana studied with Teri Einfeldt, Brian Lewis, and Philip Setzer.
She has participated in master classes with Paul Kantor, Dorothy DeLay, Cho-Liang Lin, Joseph Silverstein, Ani Kavafian, and James Buswell.

At the age of eleven, Shana won First Place in the Connecticut Solo Competition of the American String Teachers
Association. Her debut as a soloist with orchestra took place in March of 1999, when she performed in her native West Hartford,
Connecticut. That same year, Shana also played as a soloist with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. In 2000 and again in
2002, Shana was selected as soloist with the Viva Vivaldi! All-Girl Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She
performed as soloist again at the Kennedy Center in 2001 with the Washington Chamber Symphony.

This past summer, Shana attended the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Institute for Young Artists, where she studied chamber music with Miriam Fried, Paul
Biss, Shmuel Ashkenazi, Atar Arad, Timothy Eddy, and Menahem Pressler. She also appeared in performance with pianist
Gilbert Kalish. For five summers Shana studied with David Cerone and David Updegraff at the Encore School for Strings in
Cleveland, Ohio, where her string quartet twice captured the festival’s only student prize, the Kay Logan Chamber Music Award.
Other summer festivals that she has attended include the Sarasota and Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festivals. Shana plays a 1778
Joseph and Antonio Gagliano violin on loan to her from the Ravinia Festival.
