Biography

Wenting Kang was born in Hunan Province, China, on Dec. 21st 1987.  She began learning to play the violin at the age of six with Puzhang Ai. In 2003, she attended the Middle School attached to the Central Conservatory of Music, and transferred her major to viola, studying under the tutorship of Professor Changhai Wang. In 2006, she was transferred directly to the Central Conservatory of Music.

While studying, she has benefited from many opportunities to take part in master classes for both solo and chamber music playing, in which she learned from world-known musicians including Bruno Pasquier, Don Mcinnes, Hariolf Schlichtig, Kim Kashkashian, Lars Anders Thomter, Matthias Buchholz, Maxim Rysanov, Philips Dukes, Pinchas Zukermann, Rainer Kussmaul, Rennie Reghr, Roberto Diaz, Tabea Zimmermann, Sadao Harada, and Wolfgang Kloss.

In December 2005, she won the first prize in the 5th August Dombrovska International Competition of the Viola Group in Latvia. Also, she won first place in the Viola Concerto Competition in the Central Conservatory of Music in 2006. The next year in April, she won the first prize of the Senior Division in the First China Viola Festival-National Viola Competition, where she also gained New Composition Performance Award and Concert Piece Performance Award. Again in 2010, she won the third prize of Viola Group in the 17th Johannes Brahms International Competition. In addition, she won the Robertson prize in the 13th Primrose International Viola Competition in 2011.

In 2005 and 2006, she participated in the 9th and 10th Morningside Music Bridge international music festival in Canada with a special award in the 10th festival. Through the invitation, she attended the Schleswig-Holstein International Orchestral Academy which was held in Germany in 2007, 2008 and 2009, to take part in international tour concerts. In 2008, she was recommended to attend the Carl Nielsen master class in Denmark. In 2009, she was selected to be a participant at Verbier Festival Academy in Switzerland. In the next year, she was invited to Rencontre Musicale Camerata Lysy Music Festival in Italy. Also, she was selected to participate in Yellow Barn Music Festival in 2011.

Now she is studying at New England Conservatory to earn her Master of Music degree, studying with Garth Knox and Kim Kashkashian.
