Regarded by “Fanfare” magazine as a “superstar of the
international brass scene,” William VerMeulen bases his varied musical life in
Houston where he has been Principal Horn of the Houston Symphony since. 1990.
Equally at home as soloist, chamber musician, teacher and now music
publisher, Mr. VerMeulen’s recent and upcoming engagements in New York, Spain,
Hong Kong, Singapore, Israel, Poland, Canada, Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Ohio,
Idaho, Orcas Island, Virginia, Washington and Texas help establish his role as
an ambassador of arts from Houston.
His critically acclaimed recording of the complete Mozart Horn
Concerti with Christoph Eschenbach and Houston Symphony has sold out of its
third pressing.
Numerous works have been written to showcase Mr. VerMeulen’s
artistry including concerti by Samuel Adler and Pierre Jalbert.
Mr. VerMeulen has participated
as a performer and on faculty with the finest music festivals and chamber music
presenters some of which include: Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center,
Aspen, Music@Menlo, Banff, DaCamera, Orpheus, Joshua Bell, Methow, Tanglewood,
Steamboat Springs, Orcas Island, and the Sun Valley Summer Symphony where he
also serves as Principal Horn.
Mr. VerMeulen received first
prize at the 1980 International Horn Society Soloist Competition and the
Shapiro Award for Most Outstanding Brass Player at the Tanglewood Festival.
Mr. VerMeulen is Professor of
Horn at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University with students
performing in numerous major orchestras throughout the world including the
orchestras of New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Israel, Cleveland, Cincinnati,
Dallas and Houston. He is a member of the International Horn Society Advisory
Council and in 1985 was invited to the White House to receive a “Distinguished
Teacher of America Certificate of Excellence” from President Reagan and the
White House commission on Presidential Scholars.
