Biography

Alfred Bachelet ( Paris on 26 February 1864 - Nancy 10 February 1944 ) is a composer French , conductor and teacher.

Bachelet studied at the Paris Conservatry with Ernest Guiraud and graduated in 1890.  His cantata Cleopatra from a text of Fernand Beissier received the second Prix de Rome . In 1907 he was the choir master  of the Paris Opera.  In 1919, he took over from Guy Ropartz as director of the Conservatory of Nancy and remained in that position until his death in 1944. In 1929, he held the seat of André Messager at the Academy of Fine Arts .

Bachelet has composed three operas, symphonic and choral works, ballet and lieder. His symphonic poem Sûryâh was considered by music critic Gustave Samazeuilh as a key work of French music at the time of the Second World War. His song Chère nuit (Dear night, 1897), which he wrote for the singer Nellie Melba, has enjoyed international success.
