Biography

A 2010 laureate of the prestigious Fondation Marcel Bleustein-Blanchet in France, violinist Etienne Gara was invited to participate in the Perlman Music Program in New York in 2009 and 2010. Later he joined violinist Itzhak Perlman for the winter residency of the festival in Sarasota, FL and for a tour in Israel. Mr. Gara has performed recitals throughout Europe and North America, including in Hungary, France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Canada, and the USA, appearing in prominent halls such as Jordan Hall in Boston, the Marigny Theatre in Paris, the Wiener Saal and the Marmor Saal of the Mirabell Palace in Salzburg. Since making his orchestral solo debut in 2005 with the Savaria Symphony Orchestra conducted by Tamás Pál, in Hungary, he has gone on to perform with the Domžale Symphony Orchestra in Slovenia and the Indiana University Orchestra in the USA. Mr. Gara’s concerts have been broadcast by Hungarian television, Swiss radio Espace 2, Belgian station Musiq3, and French national radio France Musique. In addition to the Perlman Music Program, Mr. Gara has participated in several festivals, including the Juventus Festival in France, where he met the composer Éric Tanguy who later wrote a piece for him. Mr. Gara has also attended the Aurora Festival in Sweden, the Orford Music Festival in Canada, and the Academy of Music of Lausanne with Pierre Amoyal and Bruno Canino, where he was nominated Laureate. He won the "Music Live Now" competition, created by Sir Yehudi Menuhin, and a Special Prize at the Raiffeisen Klassik Competition in Salzburg. He is also Laureate of the 5th International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition, in Boston, MA. In 2005, He had the honor of being chosen concertmaster for the opening concert of the new Auditorium of the Mozarteum Salzburg, Austria. A passionate chamber musician, Etienne Gara has performed with artists including Roger Tapping, Jacob Koranyi, Plamena Mangova, Julian Steckel, Nathan Braude, Graf Mourja, Ferenc Vizi, Filomena Moretti, and Alissa Margulis. He has been coached by such eminent musicians as János Starker, Itzhak Perlman, Donald Weilerstein, Paul Katz, Kim Kashkashian, Roger Tapping, Menahem Pressler, the Borromeo Quartet, Reiner Schimdt, Ferenc Rados, Dénes Várjon, and Simone Fontanelli. Born in Paris to a French mother and Hungarian father, Étienne Gara started playing the violin at age 5. After studying at the Conservatoire National de Région de Boulogne-Billancourt, he continued his studies at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg, with Igor Ozim and Helmut Zehetmair. As an Erasmus scholarship recipient, he worked with Victor Tretiakov at the Musikhochschule of Cologne before completing his Performer Diploma with Mauricio Fuks at Indiana University, where he was granted a full scholarship. He earned his Master of Music at New England Conservatory, under renowned pedagogue and violinist Donald Weilerstein. Throughout his musical journey, Mr. Gara has had the opportunity to work extensively with Irina Botchkova and Graf Mourja, and has had the pleasure of participating in master classes with Midori, Miriam Fried, and Dénes Zsigmondy. Mr. Gara is currently under the tutelage of celebrated violinist Midori, at University of South California, in Los Angeles, where he is also a violin instructor.
