Biography

John Holter started piano studies at age 9. In college, he played the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Allegheny College Symphony, and also performed an all-Prokofiev piano recital. He then studied medicine and joined the Pulmonary Section of the East Carolina University (ECU) School of Medicine in 1984. He resumed piano studies at the ECU School of Music, with Paul Tardif from 1985-2005, and Keiko Sekino from 2006-2010. He retired from medicine in 2016. He maintains an avid interest in chamber music, regularly collaborating with string students at the ECU School of Music since 2006. From 2011-2014, he co-organized with Anthony Warner an annual two-week chamber music festival in Sacile and Trieste, Italy, attended by ECU students and musicians from other countries. During summer months he attends SummerTrios and the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music. For the past 30 years, he has been the pianist at Peace Presbyterian Church.
