Jonathan Dormand, Cello

Biography

Born in South Yorkshire, cellist Jonathan Dormand has performed as both solo artist and chamber musician throughout the UK and much of Europe, Canada, Japan and the USA at venues such as Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall and Festival’s such as Prades Pablo Casals Festival, IMS Prussia Cove and Ravinia performing alongside pianist John O’Conor and violist Atar Arad.

Jonathan studied at the Royal Northern College of Music under the tutelage of Hannah Roberts and in July 2010 graduated with a first class Honours degree. During this period Jonathan was guided by Ralph Kirshbaum, both at the RNCM and the London Master Classes. He now studies at the New England Conservatory pursuing a Master of Music degree with Laurence Lesser and where he is the Charlotte F. Rabb Presidential Scholar. Jonathan’s studies have been complemented by additional seminars with Steven Isserlis, Gary Hoffman, Timothy Eddy, Frans Helmerson and Bernard Greenhouse.

Jonathan has won numerous awards for his playing from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, Hattori Foundation, Musicians Benevolent Fund and the Philharmonia Orchestra/Martin Musical Scholarship Fund. Upcoming performances include his Purcell Room debut in April 2012 and he is pleased to participate in the Countess of Munster Recital Scheme. Jonathan plays a cello made in c. 1780 by John Betts and is Kindly on loan to him by the Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute.
