Biography

Chicago native Jonita Lattimore is a current member of the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists. She made her Lyric Opera debut last season in Kurt Weill's The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny and can be seen this season as Micaela in Carmen. Formerly a member of the Houston Opera Studio, she appeared in many productions of the Houston Grand Opera including: Marguerite in Faust. First Lady in Die Zauberflote. St. Cecilia in Four Saints in Three Acts, and created roles in the world premieres of Harvey Milk and Jackie O (recorded on Decca). She made her Paris debut at the Bastille Opera as Serena in Porgy and Bess and last year made her debut in Italy performing with the Orchestra della Toscana under the direction of Bruno Bartoletti in concerts and radio broadcasts. She has also performed in Edinburgh Scotland. Her oratorio repertoire includes performances of The Creation and Messiah, the Requiems of Mozart, Verdi and Brahms. Poulenc's Gloria, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Choral Fantasy among others, locally, she has been heard at the Ravinia Festival, Grant Park Festival, Chicago Opera Theater and was the leading soprano in the Goodman Theater's Cry, the Beloved Country, as well as many recitals in the Chicago area. Ms. Lattimore was recently featured on Artbeat Chicago, an arts television program on WTTW-Chicago's Public Broadcast System on which an artist profile was done: Home Grown Diva! She appears on WTTW's Opera Philes: a program of favorite opera arias and ensembles. A frequent winner in competitions, she has been honored by the Birgit Nilsson Competition, the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, the MacAllister Awards, the Sullivan Foundation and the George London Foundation. In Chicago she received the 1999 Rose M. Grundman Scholarship, 199X Union League Scholarship and the 1998 Lynne Harvey Scholarship for the Musicians Club of Women. Upcoming appearances include a Millennium Concert with the Fort Worth Symphony, several recitals in the Chicago area, and concerts with the Northern Israel Symphony in Haifa, Israel.
