Biography
Violinist Korbinian
Altenberger is rapidly earning critical attention and performance
experience in his growing musical career, appearing on concert stages
throughout Europe and the United States,
Asia, Israel, South Africa, and New Zealand. Born in Munich, Mr. Altenberger began his violin studies in his
native Germany,
attending the Musikhochschule Köln. Mr. Altenberger received further degrees from the New England Conservatory as a
student of Donald Weilerstein, and most
recently completed his studies with Midori Goto at the University of Southern California where he was a
recipient of the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Scholarship.
Represented by Astral Artists since 2005, Mr. Altenberger recently made both his concerto and recital debuts in Philadelphia under its
auspices. He has also appeared
as soloist with such orchestras as the Auckland
Philharmonia, Brno Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Elgin
Symphony, Haddonfield Symphony (now Symphony in C), Halle Philharmonic, Munich
Philharmonic and the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire. A
winner of several top competition prizes, Mr. Altenberger was an
Artist-in-Residence at the State Orchestra of Eisenach, Germany, and served as
concertmaster of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and of Köln's WDR Radio
Symphony Orchestra. A dedicated
chamber musician, Mr. Altenberger participated for two subsequent seasons in
the Steans Institute for Young Artists at the Ravinia Festival and has
performed at the Marlboro Music Festival, among others.
Mr. Altenberger's concert
engagements in the 2009/2010 season include appearances in Philadelphia
under Astral Artists, in New York with the
Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra and the Omega Ensemble, and a performance
with Midori and the IRIS Chamber Orchestra in Memphis. Mr. Altenberger is increasingly
involved in musical community engagement, having worked with Live Music Now!
in Europe, Partners in Performance in
the U.S., and Music Sharing in Japan,
under whose auspices he participated in a chamber music and community
engagement tour of Cambodia with Midori in December 2007, with follow-up
engagements in Japan in June 2008.
