Biography

Violinist Maia Cabeza was born in Japan in 1992 and commenced studies in Toronto at the age of 4. Accepted at 13, she is currently a student at the Curtis Institute of Music and studies with Ida Kavafian and Joseph Silverstein. All students at Curtis receive merit-based full-tuition scholarships, and Ms. Cabeza is the Dr. Samuel R. and Mrs. Beatrice S. Rossman Fellow. 

Ms. Cabeza had her first soloist performance with orchestra at the age of 10, and more recently, she has performed as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony, Reno Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony, and with the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra in two gala concerts at Carnegie Hall. In addition to these performances, Ms. Cabeza has soloed with several orchestras including the Orquesta Academica del Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Danville Symphony, Keshet Eilon Chamber Orchestra, and the Chapel Hill Philharmonia. 

In 2004, she was loaned an 1892 Gragnani violin by the Stradivari Society of Chicago, and in 2005, she was awarded a $25,000 fellowship from the Davidson Institute for Talent Development towards advancing musical studies. A finalist in the 2009 Philadelphia Orchestra Competition and a semi-finalist in the Michael Hill and Buenos Aires International Violin Competitions, Ms. Cabeza was the 2nd place laureate of the Sphinx Competition and winner of the North Carolina Symphony Competition. 

A dedicated and passionate chamber musician, Ms. Cabeza performs frequently with various ensembles. She has collaborated with distinguished artists such as Shmuel Ashkenasi, Carter Brey, Ida Kavafian, Shlomo Mintz, and members of the Cleveland, Guarneri and Orion String Quartets. She has also performed in numerous recitals with piano in Canada, United States, Europe, Israel and South America. Ms. Cabeza has performed in masterclasses for Ana Chumacenco, Leonidas Kavakos, Boris Kushnir, Gerhard Schulz, Gabor Takacs-Nagy, Christian Tetzlaff and Donald Weilerstein. 

A frequent participant at music festivals, Ms. Cabeza has performed and been invited to several prestigious courses. Recently, Ms. Cabeza was invited to perform as a young artist at the 2011 Music from Angel Fire Festival. Other festivals attended include Verbier Festival Academy, Schlewsig-Holstein, Sarasota Music Festival, Keshet Eilon Mastercourse, Yellowbarn Young Artists Program, Aspen Music Festival, as well as Prussia Cove International Music Seminar and Open Chamber Music in Cornwall, England.
