Mark Knippel, Composer

Biography

Mark Knippel (b. 1983) studied composition at Southern Oregon
University, primarily under Todd Barton and Wayne Slawson. He graduated
in 2006 with a BA in music composition and education. He has written
for saxophone quartet, woodwind quintet, and various other chamber
groups, and for concert band, theater projects and film. His saxophone
quartet, "At the Loss of Love and Folly", has been published by Dorn
Publications. Two of his guitar quartets ("Marenje" and "Attained
Elusiveness") will be recorded by the San Francisco Guitar Quartet
(www.sfgq.com); the CD will be released sometime in 2009. Current
projects include works for a large mixed chamber ensemble, solo pieces
for flute and saxophone respectively, an antiphonal piece for five
trumpets, and settings of ee cummings's poetry for a solo percussionist.

Mark
completed an assistantship for the world-premiere musical, Tracy's
Tiger, at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon in 2006.
He has received the ASCAPlus Award, and received the Schneider Award,
given to the outstanding music student at Southern Oregon University,
in 2006. Mark was an employee of the Britt Festivals in Medford,
Oregon, where he served as the Education Assistant from 2006-2008. He
currently studies with Dr. Robert Kyr and Dr. David Crumb at the
University of Oregon, in pursuit of his M.Mus. in Composition.
