I began drumming at the age of eight. By the time I was 15 and in junior high school, the high school music teacher put me in the band. In the early 1950's I played in a "swing band" at local dances and parties. I married an oboist, so I then studied tympani and we both played in symphony orchestras in the suburban Philadelphia area. In the 20 years between 1976 and 1996, I was playing a rope tension drum for a colonial re-enactment group.
