Biography

Narek Arutyunian was born in Gyumri, Armenia in 1992.When Narek was 10 he took the clarinet in his hands for the first time. Graduated from Central Music School in Moscow at the age of sixteen, Narek studied at Moscow State Conservatory 2009/10 with Evgeny Petrov, Queens College at the CUNY 2010/11. Since 2011’s fall he has been studying at the Juilliard School with Charles Neidich.

As a soloist Narek has appeared with the Boston Pops, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio, Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra of New Russia, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, Kaliningrad Philharmonic, Albany Symphony, Meridian Symphony in Mississippi, Kremlin, Musica Viva and Queens College Chamber Orchestras. Narek has given recitals at Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, the Louvre in Paris, Beijing’s Forbidden City Concert Hall, New York’s Merkin Hall, Morgan Library and Museum in New York, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Washington Center for the Performing Arts, Lied Center of Kansas, Buffalo Chamber Music Society, Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, Palazzo del Principe in Genoa, Museum of Grenoble, Kaliningrad Philharmonic Hall among others. Narek has performed under batons of Keith Lockhart, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Vladimir Spivakov, Saulius Sondeckis, Misha Rakhlevsky, Alexander Rudin, Charles Neidich. As a chamber musician, Narek has appeared with Australian String Quartet, Alexander Kobrin, Ran Dank, Ian Munro, Boris Brovtsyn etc.

Narek has performed numerous concerts at major concert halls and festivals all throughout North America, Europe and Asia: Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Rudolfinum Dvorak Hall in Prague, United Nations Hall in Geneva, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, George Weston Recital Hall at Toronto’s Centre for the Arts, Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, St Petersburg’s Philharmonic Hall. Young Concert Artists Festival in Tokyo, Japan, Mozart et Tchaikovsky International Music Festival in Paris, Huntington Estate Music Festival in Australia, Concertino Praga South Bohemia Festival, the Homecoming in Moscow.

In recent seasons Narek toured with concerts in various cities of the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, China, Russia, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Czech Republic, Poland and Belarus. His performances have been broadcast on Deutschlandradio Kultur in Germany, Radio Classique in France, WXQR in New York, ABC Classic FM in Australia, Toronto's Classical 96.3, Radio Orpheus in Russia, Czech Classical Radio Vltava.

Narek is the First Prize winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York, 2010; International Radio Competition Concertino Praga 2008 in Prague, Czech Republic; Rotary Club Moscow International Music Children Competition in 2005, Grand Prize; International Television Contest for Young Musicians in Moscow + Special Prize of Yuri Bashmet’s State Symphony Orchestra of New Russia to record a CD as its soloist for the Kultura TV channel in 2005; International Competition for  Young musicians Music Youth of the Planet 2007 in Moscow; International Competition for Young Musicians Prazsky Hvezdopad in Prague, Grand-Prize 2008.

Narek's clarinet is a personal gift of a violinist and conductor Vladimir Spivakov
