Biography

National Youth Choir of Scotland

Formed in 1996 by its Artistic Director and Conductor, Christopher Bell, the National Youth Choir of Scotland (NYCoS) is an outstanding choir for young people aged 16–25. Membership is granted by audition to singers born, resident or studying in Scotland. NYCoS has performed at events all over the UK and has toured internationally to Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Slovakia, Sweden and the USA.

In 2012, NYCoS was the first youth arts organization to win a Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award (Ensemble category), given in celebration of outstanding achievement. 2014 saw a celebrated performance of the Mozart Requiem at the BBC Proms with Donald Runnicles and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, as well as the premiere of Eric Whitacre’s What If, to a global audience of 1.5 billion at the  Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. In 2015, NYCoS was invited by Sir John Eliot Gardiner to perform Berlioz Lelio at the Edinburgh International Festival and Festival Berlioz, France with his Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique.

As well as appearing on WFMT-FM radio, 2016 sees the Choir perform at the Grant Park Music Festival, Chicago, as well as a return to the BBC Proms and Festival Berlioz under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and an appearance at the Grand Teton Music Festival, Wyoming with Donald Runnicles.
