Xiaohui Yang, Piano

Biography

Pianist Xiaohui Yang was born in Liaoning, China. In 2008, she was awarded the Michael and Cecilia lacovella Capuzzi Memorial Fellowship to studywithIgnat Solzhenitsyn at Curtis Institute of Music for the Bachelor’s Degree and attained the Festorazzi Prizes when she graduated in 2013. She is currently studying piano with Robert McDonald and pursuing a master's degree at The Juilliard School, where she holds Cecilia Felman Piano Scholarship. Ms. Yang had held solo piano concerts and participated in many celebrating activities organized by the school before she came to USA in 2007 when she was a student at the Attached Music School of Shenyang Conservatory of Music. Her natural, devoted and impressive performances were very popular with audiences. At the moment, she studied piano with Danwen Wei, Xianwei Cheng and Rosemary Platt. In 2010 she was invited to give a solo recital at the Shenyang Foreign Culture Music Festival. 

Ms. Yang has also won many prizes in different competitions.In 2013, she was awarded the First Prize in American Protege International Piano and Strings Competition; in 2012, she obtained the Second Prize in the Piano Arts North American Biennial Competition; in 2007, she won the Second Prize in the Fourteenth Hong Kong Piano Open Competition; in 2004, she got the Third Prize in the International Chopin Piano Competition in Asia, and in 2003, she was awarded the Second Prize in the Second Toyama Asian Youth Music Competition.

In order to increasingly improve her piano playing, Ms. Yang has participated in master classes with Emanuel Ax, Peter Serkin, Jerome Lowenthal, Gary Graffman, Richard Goode, Jonathan Biss, Seymour Lipkin, and Pavlina Dokovska. She has also attended music festivals including the Third Beijing International Music Festival and Academy in 2008, Beethoven Institute in 2009, Taos School of Music in 2011 and the Tanglewood Music Center in 2013 where she held Billy Joel Keyboard Fellowship. As a performer, Ms. Yang has performed in many cities in USA. For example, she performed in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 2013; she performed as a member of a chamber music group of Curtis On Tour in San Francisco and South Korea; she was invited to high schools in Milwaukee to play solo recitals and give presentations; and she performed violin/piano duo recitals in Hawaii in 2012.   Ms. Yang has worked with Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andrews Sill, Curtis Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Stern and David Hayes, and New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvali.
