PKWproductions' "Music and A Movie" Series
Celebrates its Fifth Anniversary and
Mozart's 255th Birthday with Amadeus
AUSTIN, Texas—Kicking off the fifth year of the popular "Music and A Movie" series, PKWproductions director P. Kellach Waddle and the musicians of PKWproductions present once again their flagship event: Milos Forman's highly acclaimed 1984 film Amadeus, combined with live performances of Mozart at the Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek on Sunday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. The PKWproductions' Alamo Drafthouse " Music and a Movie " series started with this event in February 2006 and has now grown into one of the most attended and prominent " alternative" classical music presentations in Austin, as well as in Houston and San Antonio.
What began as an experiment in alternative presentation of both music and film, that sprang from a meeting PKWproductions director had with his undergraduate classmate, Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League, PKWproductions "Music and A Movie" series is now a mainstay that continues to attract crowds of music and movie lovers. Other presentations have included pairing with classics such as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and have been met with near sold out audiences.
The program of both the pre-movie and intermission concerts epitomizes PKWproductions' knack for presenting both standard classical repertoire and debut compositions with engaging and unique instrumentations. The pre-movie and intermission concerts for this anniversary show are presented under the heading of "Arias and Concertos". The program features movements from concertos, an opera aria, and the world premiere of the very first piece ever composed on a Mozart theme written by PKWproductions' director, three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee P. Kellach Waddle.

While some movies about artists tend to be dull and uninspired, rendering the subject of the film far less interesting than his or her work, Amadeus is certainly an exception. In the film adaptation of Peter Shaffer's Broadway hit, director Milos Forman crafted an amazing portrait of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, filled with rich details, powerful drama and a commanding score. Amadeus covers the last 10 years of Mozart's life chronicling his triumphs and failures from the vantage point of Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), the Court Composer to Emperor Joseph II (Jeffrey Jones).The film begins in an insane asylum, where aging royal composer Salieri recalls the events of three decades earlier, when the young Mozart (Tom Hulce) first gained favor in the court of Austrian emperor Joseph II. Salieri was incensed that God would bless such a vulgar and obnoxious young snipe with divine genius. Why was Salieri--so disciplined, so devoted to his art, and so willing to toady to his superiors--not touched by God? Unable to match Mozart's talent, Salieri uses his influence in court to sabotage the young upstart's career. Disguising himself as a mysterious benefactor, Salieri commissions the backbreaking "Requiem," which eventually costs Mozart his health, wealth, and life. Amadeus won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for F. Murray Abraham.

P. Kellach Waddle enjoys a widely lauded career as a solo bassist, composer, chamber musician, orchestra musician, conductor and concert director. He has been cited as " ... an Austin classical music legend…" by Award-Winning Viola By Choice Director Aurelien Petillot; he has been called "… an amazing, incredible virtuoso..." by famed Austin radio personality John Aieili; and after his ovation-garnering solo concert at the 2009 International Society of Bassists Symposium (where he was one of only five dozen bassists from all over the world invited to perform a solo recital) convention officials declared "… (Waddle) is now obviously one of the great solo bassists of the world. "
Waddle's music has been performed over 700 times in nearly 40 states and in 10 foreign countries. With over 20 premieres scheduled for the calendar year 2011 alone and nearly over 370 works composed as of Winter 2011, Waddle continues to maintain his position as one of the most prolific and performed composers of his generation.
Waddle has been a member of numerous professional and festival orchestras including his current position with The Austin Symphony, which he has held since 1992. He has been nominated three times as a possible finalist for The Pulitzer Prize in Music and twice nominated for State of Texas Musician of The Year. He also serves as the "part-time Bach" in his position as Composer/Artist is Residence at Ascension Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas.
