George Enescu (1881, Liveni-Dorohoi - 1955, Paris)Pavane from Suite for Piano Op. 10 No. 2 in D major, "Des cloches sonores" (1901-1903), "à Monsieur Louis Diémer".Raluca Stirbat, pianoRecording produced by the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, March 2008. All rights reserved.
In the masterly Pavane, Enescu seems to pluck us out of the dimension of time. Metre and rhythm are hardly given and almost disappear, a beguilingly subtle pulse appearing. Through the trills and embellishments of the flute part, Enescu abducts us to the most intimate places in his soul: ‘… and from far, very far away, there sounds the flute of a lonely shepherd. Yes, that is the picture of my homeland I carry with me everywhere’.
