Andante et Allegro               Ernest Chausson

Although Ernest Chausson is now mainly known for his work Poeme for violin and orchestra, in his prime he was considered to be one of France´s famous composers. His colleagues included Debussy, d´Indy, Pierné, Dukas, and Fauré. He was a student of opera composer Massenet and wrote a number of operas (Helené or Le roi Arthus) in the impressionistic style with hints of Wagner´s harmonies. It is fortunate for the clarinet repertoire that before his untimely death in a bicycle accident at the age of 44, the Andante et Allegro was commisioned by the Paris Conservatoire.    Pamela Coats
