Poissons d'or from Images, Book II                     Claude Debussy

Debussy's Images Book II was composed in 1907, two years after the first book of Images.  The third of the three movements, Poissons d'or, was inspired by a Japanese lacquer panel, owned by Debussy, displaying two large golden fish frolicking in a stream.  The music paints this very picture, from the calm waters of the opening to the agitated motions of the fish displayed in the shimmering arpeggios throughout.  Debussy hated the term "impressionism", but the vivid images his music evokes lead us naturally to associate it with the visual art of the same era.     Spencer Myer
