Elegiac Trio         Arnold Bax

Blending styles of Romanticism and Impressionism, the English composer Arnold Bax wrote this trio in 1916, shortly after Debussy wrote his trio.   More importantly, it may have been written as a reaction to the Easter Rising 1916 where Bax witnessed the death of many of his friends.  Bax developed a strong relationship with the landscape and poetry of Ireland.  The balance of melancholy and joy he achieves in this work recalls the words of W.B. Yeats in his poem, Easter 1916:  "All changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born"     Elizabeth Meyers
