La Catedral           Agustin Barrios Mangoré

I       Preludio "Saudade" ;  II  Andante Religioso;  III  Allegro Solemne

Paraguayan composer Agustin Barrios' La Catedral is an evocative triptych of the composer's experience hearing the music of J.S. Bach in a cathedral in Montevideo in 1919.  The 2nd movement, Andante Religioso, represents Barrios sitting in the Cathedral enthralled by the serenity and beauty of Bach's music.  As Barrios exits the Cathedral when the 3rd movement begins, he has re-entered the bustle of activity in the streets of Montevideo.

The Prelude was added to the aforementioned pair of movements in 1940.  Saudade is a Portuguese word that loosely translates to "longing", "melancholy", or "nostalgia." The term connotes a meaning that is irrevocably lost in translation, a vague and constant desire for something that does not and probably cannot exist, for something other than the present, a turning towards the past or towards the future-an indolent dreaming wistfulness.    James Baur
