Ludwig van Beethoven’s 32 variations in C minor, WoO 80 is among his most dramatic and emotionally charged works. The theme is an 8-measure ground bass tune that was possibly influenced by Bach’s famous Chaconne– its heavy steps can be recognized in even the lightest and most transparent variations.
The final variation is the only one to exceed the original 8-measure threshold. It expands and transforms into a powerful Coda, that includes the climax, the last presentation of the main theme progression, and a heartfelt conclusion – a desperately mourning exclamation of the original theme.
