Brouillard, from Préludes Book 2, No. 1             Claude Debussy

Analogy to impressionist art was first applied to Claude Debussy's music in 1887.  By 1913, when the second book of Preludes was published, it had become clear that Debussy had continued to reflect his life experience in a new musical language.  He never agreed to the term "Impressionism" to describe his music, but in the Preludes, one can clearly hear the prominence of innovative sonorities over traditional harmonic progression.

Some of Debussy's Preludes have references to literature, visual art, vaudeville, and the circus. Ondine is an example of literature's influence on Debussy; Ondine is a playful sea nymph similar to those from Greek or German legend.  Brouillards (Mists) comes solely from Debussy's imagination.
