Sonata in G Major, Hob XVI no. 6   Joseph Haydn

Allegro;  Minuet-Trio-Minuet;  Adagio;  Finale: Allegro molto

It is easy to underestimate the importance of Haydn both in the general course of musical history and as a composer for the piano.  The qualities of his sonatas and other shorter pieces are similar to those of the more familiar string quartets and symphonies, particularly in the composer's rhythmic structure and in his humor and inventiveness.

This is a rather obscure, early harpsichord sonata by Haydn.  Each movement is a jewel; the first movement, Allegro, is full of humor.  The carefree elegance of the Minuet brilliantly surrounds and contrasts the melancholy Trio section.  The Adagio is a prayer.   The Finale is utter joy.     Su Jeon
