Canzonetta, from Années de Pèlerinage Book II: Italy         Franz  Liszt

Liszt completed and published the second set of his "Years of Pilgrimage" pieces in 1848. Ten years in the making, the collection contains some of his finest works for piano solo.  The set holds seven pieces each inspired by various masterworks of the Italian Renaissance:  a painting by Raphael, a Michelangelo statue, a song of Salvator Rosa, sonnets from Petrarch, and Dante's Divine Comedy.

No. 3 Canzonetta del Salvator Rosa

At the time of Liszt's Italian travels, the history of painter-poet-actor-musician Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) was widely known.  Two of Rosa's paintings were among the most prized pictures in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence.  This is a charming setting of a song by Rosa, who had also played in the Comedia dell'Arte.  The text is "I move frequently from place to place, but I can never change the object of my desire.  My burning love will always be the same and I too will always be the same."    Jason Cutmore
