Sonata in E major, K. 162, L. 21         Domenico Scarlatti

Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples in 1685.  A composer of more than 600 sonati, he is one of the chief exponents of Baroque keyboard music.  This prodigious output of one-movement sonati was created for use as teaching pieces for the musically gifted Maria Barbara, the Portuguese princess who later became the queen of Spain.

... The Sonata in E major, K. 162 is unusual because it switches back and forth between slow and fast sections.  Typically, one tempo and one temperament would remain constant within movements during this era.     Heather Schmidt
