Serenade, Op. 73     Robert Kahn

Robert Kahn wrote his f-minor Serenade between the two World Wars, but the composition recalls the music of an earlier era. Arranged in three distinct but continuous sections, the work's drama, tone, and fluidity are reminiscent of the early tone poems of Richard Strauss. After an introduction that seems to come from a far-away place, the piece opens with a plaintive melody in the oboe that is then elaborated on by the other instruments. After several statements of the theme, the music fades into the distance, only to explode in a jaunty Vivace section. This section contains some virtuoso work for the pianist, as the oboe and viola poke in and out of the texture with interjections and a few brief, sustained melodies. The opening theme returns briefly, and then the oboe introduces a pastorale theme that is the light-hearted subject for the remainder of the work.   Pandora's Trio
