I.  Adagio

IV.  Presto

The Sonata No. 1 in G minor is the first of a set of six works known as the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin composed by J.S. Bach. This series was completed in 1720, when Bach was a Kapellmeister in Köthen, Germany. During his employment in Köthen, Bach’s duties were primarily unrelated to the church, and he was thus able to focus on instrumental music, bringing forth many notable works, including the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. The Sonata No. 1 in G minor in its entirety consists of four movements, in the typical slow-fast-slow-fast pattern of a sonata da chiesa. Today, the first and last movements will be performed: Adagio, a rhapsodic and sonorous introduction, and Presto, a quick and lively finale.      Laura Park
