Sonata for Violin and Piano in e minor, Op. 82                      Edward Elgar

Allegro ;  Romance: Andante ;  Allegro, Non Troppo

Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) is undoubtedly one of Britain's most celebrated composers. Elgar was deeply inspired by England's countryside and culture and his music clearly reflects his love for his country. The Violin Sonata in e minor, Opus 82 was finished in September 1918. It was one of three chamber works composed more or less concurrently towards the end of the First World War at Brinkwells, Elgar's country cottage near Fittleworth in Sussex. The Sonata is in a typical three movement form. The music is at times triumphant, emotional, powerful, spooky, and peaceful and Elgar brings all of these different characters together beautifully. Interestingly, Elgar's Sonata has never become part of the traditional violin repertoire and it is rarely performed nowadays. It is nonetheless a wonderful work by a great composer at the height of his powers.   Michael Cansfield
