Musician's or Publisher's Notes
This work demonstrates Wieniawski's ability to compose an entertaining piece of music while providing a vehicle to show off his technical skill and musical finesse as a performer. The musician Andreas Moser said Wieniawski was "unquestionably a violinist of genius, one of the greatest of all time." Being a salon piece, Variations is less concerned about conveying some heavy musical idea than about demonstrating the talent of the performer. Salon pieces were short pieces that emerged in the 19th century when it became popular to feature performers in intimate gatherings in living rooms of wealthy hosts. Variations on an Original Theme, through skillful embellishment of the theme, allows the violinist to display her virtuosity in the variations, and gives the audience a chance to indulge in the heights of technical ability and musicality that the violinist brings to the stage.      Emma Steele
