Sir Hamilton Harty (1879-1941) composed several short pieces for cello and piano, largely the product of his close working relationship with British cellist William Henry Squire. Despite coming from a long line of Anglican church musicians in Northern Ireland (and therefore culturally identifying strongly as British), his best-known work is the Irish Symphony (1904, revised 1915 and 1924), which plays upon themes from indigenous Irish folk music. He wrote many works across several genres, but is remembered most for his tenure as Conductor and Music Director (1922-1933) of the Hallé Symphony Orchestra in Manchester. He also had a considerable reputation as an accompanist, and in 1932 was appointed Music Director of the London Symphony Orchestra.
