This work is the second of three “concert études” written by Liszt in the mid-to-late 1840s, and is a wonderful example of Liszt’s ability to raise the “étude”, or technical study, to an art form and concert staple.  It begins with a simple melodic line, but rapidly develops its namesake quality (leggierezza means “lightness”), as Liszt spins delicate lines of chromatic sixteenths in long, unbroken strings.  The work progresses to a climax featuring a blizzard of chromatic thirds.     Hye-Won Cho
